Zeebrugge
The Belgian coastal towns are popular destinations. Thanks to its location on the North Sea coast, and the deep water, Zeebrugge has developed into the largest cruise port in Flanders. Bruges is approximately 17 km from Zeebrugge, and is well worth a visit. The architecture, and beautiful medieval surroundings make Bruges a unique place in Europe.
Every year the number of cruise ships calling on at Zeebrugge grows. The port is very attractive to cruise lines as well as passengers themselves because of the easy navigationa and access. Cruise passangers can also take luxury boats from Zeebrugge to the medieval towns of Bruge, Ghent, Antwerpen or Brussels.
Antwerp
Visiting Antwerp by Ocean or River cruise or your own boat is a unique experience.
Ocean cruises will dock at Wandelteras Zuid (in the city centre). You are immediately greeted by the sight of the Cathedral of Our Lady. The cruise terminal (Steenplein) is just a five-minute walk from the historic city centre, the main shopping streets and the many pubs and restaurants in the city.
River cruise boats dock in either the Scheldt river quays or Kattendijkdok/Willemdok. They are both within walking distance of the city centre. And for those who sail to Antwerp on your own boat, you can moor in the marina on the Left Bank or in the Willemdok marina.
Ghent
Ghent is one of the three great cities of northern Flanders (alongside Antwerp and Bruges), with a proud medieval past as a prosperous inland port, which forms a unique feature ot its skyline.
The port of Ghent traditionally receives many inland river cruises. Cruise passengers will arrive via Antwerp or Zeebrugge. River boat cruises visiting Ghent dock close to the city center, and most cruise lines offer free shuttles to transport people the 1.5 mi/2 km distance into the city. Larger ships have to dock at Antwerp or Zeebrugge.
Today it is a prosperous commercial centre, with a famous university. Its greatest treasure is in the cathedral: The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, by Jan van Eyck. But it also has plenty of museums, including SMAK – a centre for contemporary art. You can also stroll around its medieval streets and enjoy the warm hospitality of the cafés, bars and restaurants.
